Standard 5 Teachers know how to manage a classroom. The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
Rationale 1: This blended learning unit was developed to make the economics curriculum more engaging and more “real world” to students. It was designed to incorporate a wide variety of instructional methods combining face-to-face time with mediums such as online posting and discussions, videos, Power Points, and a stock market simulation. Because it is online, it encourages students to be actively engaged, and the stock market simulation encourages self-motivation. Parts of this unit were taught and students found the stock market simulation both meaningful and fun.
This unit has been very valuable to my development as a teacher. The online component allows for more up to date information to be a part of student learning and gives students the opportunity to work at their own pace during class, as long as deadlines are met, and are able to explore the information they choose at their own pace.
KSD

The stock market simulation offers a self-motivating setting as students work to be successful with their money and trades.
5.S.1 The teacher creates a smoothly functioning learning community in which students assume responsibility for themselves and one another, participate in decision making, work collaboratively and independently, and engage in purposeful learning activities.
The online portion of the unit requires decision making when trading stocks, and students must be responsible for their own decisions and how they handle their money.
5.D.3 The teacher values the role of students in promoting each other’s learning and recognizes the importance of peer relationships in establishing a climate for learning.
